One of the best treks in the world, The Everest trek is a window into traditional Sherpa villages and `gompas` (monasteries), their mountain Buddhist culture and their sacred peaks and valley. The trek takes trekkers to the very bottom of the world’s highest mountain- Everest (8,848m), also known as Chomolungma in Tibetan and Sagarmatha in Nepali. A short flight from Kathmandu takes you to Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla , a small town and also the gateway into the Khumbu region. Since the trek is done in the Sagarmatha National Park, it houses 118 species of birds and numerous rare mammals such as Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, Red Panda and Himalayan Wolves. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Himalayas with a visit to Everest base camp and KalaPatthar (5555m), a viewpoint recognized as the best vantage point to see Mount Everest and its surrounding peaks of Lhotse, Nuptse etc.
This amazing trek can be done as a tea-house and lodges trek as there are plenty of lodges providing excellent facilities from attached bathrooms with hot showers, traditional Sherpa food, dal bhat and even western meals like pizzas, burgers, spaghetti, pasta, pies, delicious bakery items and plenty more. This trek into the heart of the Himalayas can be done from March – May and October – December for excellent weather and the best views.

Best Time To Go
The Everest region can be visited year-round, although the spring (March to May) and the fall (late September to early November) are the best time for clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The winter (late November to February) can be quite cold with below-freezing temperatures—especially above Namche Bazaar. Teahouses will also be more available and accommodating and you'll have more time to interact with the local people (although many will have left for Kathmandu for the winter). In the summer (late June to early September) comes with clouds and potential flight delays out of Lukla.
If you would like to catch a glimpse of Everest expeditions in action and see their base camps. the spring is the best time to go. The population of camps at Base Camp surges with dozens of expedition groups. You may not exactly experience the serenity of nature, but it's exciting to rub shoulders with soon-to-be Everest summiteers.
The Everest Base Camp route is dotted with local teahouses where most trekkers spend the night. For more information on what these local teahouses are like, check out our article on Teahouse Trekking in Nepal. There are also luxury lodges, like Yeti Mountain Home and Everest Summit Lodges, available during the first 5-6 days of the trek. A great option we often recommend is to have a mixture of luxury lodges and local teahouses during your trek.
Sagarmatha National Park (the Everest region) is composed of four glacial valleys spilling down from the Himalayan range that borders Tibet. The Sherpa people have settled these valleys over the centuries, cultivating a great network of trails that run along the valley floor as well as up and over the ridge lines that separate them. The result—a number of great trekking routes that can be combined with Everest Base Camp.
The adventure hiking journey to Mount Everest Base Camp offers stunning mountain scenery, rich cultural experiences, unique cuisine, and basic but cozy accommodations. The iconic Khumbu glacier and icefall against the backdrop of Mt. Everest are simply breathtaking. Not to miss the stunning pyramids of Ama Dablam Peak and Lhotse, Nuptse, and Purori, including the parades of peaks all around.
The unique and vibrant culture of the legendary Sherpa people enriches your voyage to the base camp of Everest. Interaction with local trek crew and people, visiting the Buddhist monasteries, and a caravan of yaks and porters enrich your adventure experience. You visit and explore the Buddhist monasteries at Namache, Pangboche, and Tengboche, which offer unique insight into the spiritual life and culture of the Khumbu region. The colorful prayer flag fluttering on the hilltops and suspension bridges with the Buddhist chanting of Om Mane Padme Hum inscribed on Mani Walls creates a sensory experience of a lifetime. One must be there to experience its sights and sounds.
Increasingly popular (but still less crowded) variations for the EBC Trek are the Gokyo Lakes and Three Passes Treks. The lower parts of the trek are identical to the EBC trek (unless you combine it with other variations described here), while both routes deviate from the main EBC trail above Namche Bazaar and take you into adjacent valleys and over high passes before joining the EBC trail again close to Base Camp.
