About Trek

The sparkling, pristine blue and green waters of the Gokyo Lakes are one of Nepal’s most memorable sights. They comprise the highest freshwater lake system in the world, at around 5,000 meters. The Gokyo lakes trek is one the most excellent and picturesque less trodden trek in Everest region. Trekking into the Gokyo valley explore the Shangri-la with thundering rivers, peaceful valleys, pristine turquoise lakes, moonscape – like glacier with parade of snowy peaks.

Trek to the high alpine Gokyo lakes and a traverse of Renjo la pass links the stunning Gokyo valley to the remote Bhote Koshi valley makes a different trekking experience. Enjoying the Sherpa hospitality, we ascend through the rhododendron and conifer forest to the yak herders’ settlements of sacred lakes of Gokyo and Gokyo Ri (5425m) to savor the majestic views of Lhotse, Makalu, Cho-Oyu, Everest – four of the eight highest mountain on earth with many more hovering in horizon.Gokyo lakes is trekkers’ paradise trekking route – a valley of vibrant turquoise lakes which are set among like jewels amidst the highest snowy peaks. A traverse onto the Renjo la to the dramatic solitary Bhote Koshi valley put you on the historical trade route between Nepal and Tibet.

More Information

Accommodations:

We will be staying at  3-star hotel. For the trek we will be using lodges or tea houses for accommodations. All accommodations are on twin-shared basis.

Meals:

We will be provided all meals during the trek while buffet-style breakfast will be made available in Kathmandu. Most lodges/tea houses in the mountains will serve Nepali, Indian, Tibetan and the more common continental dishes. While trekking we have breakfast and dinner from the lodge menu whereas lunch will be taken on route to the next destination. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements:

Gokyo Panorama Trek is a moderate trek. If we are able to walk for around 5-6 hours each day we can easily trek for longer hours with a light back pack. The trek is relatively easier for those who are used to walking in higher elevations. K.Tenzing Adventure requests its guests to jog and exercise regularly at least a few months before the beginning of the trip. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. It is also important that we consult with our doctor before booking the trek. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should also inform K.Tenzing Adventure before booking the trek.

Best Time to Travel:

We can do Gokyo Panorama Trek during Autumn (Sept. to November) and Spring (March to May) seasons. During this time the sky is clear and the views are excellent. The weather is fit for trekking without rain. We can also enjoy lush vegetation on the lower regions of the trail particularly during the spring season.

Variations - Return to Lukla via Renjo La

Instead of returning back the same way to Namche Bazaar, take the Renjo La pass (west, just above Gokyo village) and descend down into a beautiful valley that eventually leads back to Namche Bazaar, where you follow the normal route back to Lukla. This route is much less trodden and takes you through the beautiful Sherpa villages of Thame and Thamo.

Combine with Everest Base Camp

You can also extend your trek by crossing over Cho La pass (to the east) and connecting with the popular Everest Base Camp trek. From Gokyo village, you'll immediately cross the Ngozumpa glacier and then make a steep climb up the pass, before descending down to join the Everest Base Camp trail.

Complete all "Three Passes"

The Gokyo Lakes trek can also be combined with the Three Passes trek. Crossing the second of the three passes (counter-clockwise), Cho La, takes you to Gokyo village. From there you can climb Gokyo Ri, continue on to the upper lakes, and/or follow the Gokyo Lakes route on your return journey to Lukla. If you want to combine these treks, it is recommended that you start on the Three Passes trek and join the Gokyo Lakes trek, rather than the other way around, due to the altitudes and acclimatization.
